Washington DC

Our second stop was Washington DC.  We went for a luxury hotel - the Washington Hilton, which was wonderful. We even nearly met President Clinton there!  We did meet lots of very interesting characters who attended the Halloween Ball on Oct 29- unfortunately none of the photos came out as we lost our entire first roll of film.
Spent our first day on a bus tour of the memorials, and a trip to Arlington cemetery. (and revisited a few of these on a night tour).  A trip to the White House, and the Smithsonian Natural History museum the next day, and the Smithsonian Air & Space museum the day after.
We spent the evening of Oct 31st in Georgetown and enjoyed the uniquely American Halloween festivities.  Other events were a trip out to George Washington's house at Mount Vernon (a beautiful warm fall/autumn day), and a trip to the top of the heavily scaffolded Washington Monument.
And there was so much more we wanted to do...

President Clinton actually did visit while we were there (and his multitude of security people) to address a teachers convention also taking place.  We waited at one of the 'possible' entrances, but unfortunately he used the 'underground' one.  Later we found that it would have been unlikely for him to use the one we were waiting at, as it was where President Reagan had been shot a number of years ago...
